Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is one of the most powerful tools available for managing diabetes today. Angie Llewellyn, Credentialled Diabetes Educator, can help you understand CGM technology and get the most out of it — from choosing the right device to interpreting your readings with confidence.
What is a CGM?
A CGM is a small sensor worn on the body — typically on the upper arm or abdomen — that measures glucose levels in real time, day and night. Instead of finger-prick testing multiple times a day, a CGM continuously tracks your glucose and sends readings to your smartphone or reader device.
Benefits of CGM include:
- Real-time glucose readings without finger pricks
- Trend arrows showing whether glucose is rising or falling
- Alerts for high and low glucose levels
- Detailed data to help you understand how food, activity, and medication affect your glucose
- Improved confidence and peace of mind

CGM Devices Available in Australia
There are several CGM devices available in Australia, each with different features to suit different needs and lifestyles. Angie can help you understand which device may be the best fit for you.
- Dexcom G7 — A real-time CGM worn on the abdomen or upper arm. Sends continuous readings directly to a smartphone or compatible receiver. Known for its accuracy and customisable alerts.
- Dexcom G6 — An earlier Dexcom model still widely used, worn on the abdomen. Offers real-time readings and integration with insulin pumps.
- FreeStyle Libre 2 — A flash glucose monitoring system worn on the upper arm. Requires a scan with a reader or smartphone to get a reading, with optional real-time alerts. Very popular in Australia.
- FreeStyle Libre 3 — The latest Abbott model, offering automatic real-time readings sent to a smartphone without needing to scan. The smallest CGM sensor currently available.
- Medtronic Guardian 4 — Designed to integrate with Medtronic insulin pumps as part of a closed-loop system. Offers real-time glucose readings and automated insulin delivery when used with a compatible pump.
- Eversense E3 — A longer-term implantable CGM sensor inserted under the skin by a clinician, lasting up to 6 months. Less common but suitable for those wanting a longer-wear option.
Availability, pricing, and NDSS subsidy eligibility may vary between devices. Angie can help you navigate your options based on your individual needs, lifestyle, and budget.
Government Subsidies for CGM
The Australian Government provides subsidised CGM products through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) for eligible Australians.
Currently, CGM is fully subsidised for people living with Type 1 diabetes.
The government is actively reviewing and considering expanding CGM subsidy eligibility, with a particular focus on people living with diabetes who are on insulin therapy. This is an evolving area, and broader access is anticipated in coming years.
For those not currently eligible for a subsidy, CGM devices are available for purchase privately. Costs vary depending on the brand and sensor type, but typically range from approximately $80–$120 per month for sensors. Angie can help you understand your options and find a solution that works for your circumstances and budget.
To check your eligibility and register for NDSS subsidised CGM products, visit the NDSS website or speak with your diabetes care team.
